A Place Steeped in History
The Pepe Cafe is the only food establishment on the Main Road of Tairua that has views of the estuary. Originally a Post Office until the late 80's, the building was converted into a Bar and Bistro — the first hospitality business in the building.
In 2008, it became known as "The Pepe" — named after the local Pepe estuary and a popular saying amongst locals: "Let's go down to the Pepe!" Today, this remains our slogan. The Tui bird in our logo represents the local New Zealand birdlife. In Maori, 'pepe' means a baby, and the Pepe estuary was historically a place of food gathering for the locals — a tradition we proudly continue.
